Off the top of the head, the programme might have been of interest to cricket lovers or general sports fans if it considered questions like: what have been the common factors between winning teams, the shared difficulties experienced by the losers, what might England or Australia do differently this time? What is the role of wrist-spin, can you win the Ashes without an attacking spinner, is reverse swing as vital as it once was, will it come to the fore again, what are the pros and cons of preparing seaming pitches, how important is batting tempo, what is the impact of captaincy? The overall impression of the hour-long doc, viewable now on iPlayer, is that someone came up with an excellent title and then realised that actually examining or explaining “how to win the Ashes” was too much like hard work. If England’s cricketers are playing without fear of failure, this programme has a fear of thought. It is both a missed opportunity to get under the bonnet of this uniquely beloved and enduring sporting contest, and also a depressing bellwether of how TV refuses to go into any sort of depth with non-live sporting programming. The BBC has dropped a sitter with the recent ‘How to Win the Ashes’ documentary.
